Eyebrow tinting, shaping and lamination: what lasts and what does not
Eyebrow tint darkens fine, light hairs between coarser ones, making the brow look fuller without adding hair. At Beauty Rocío it costs CHF 22 and lasts until the tinted hairs are replaced: three to four weeks in our experience. Shape, tint, lamination and serum each address a different concern. This guide explains what each can do and where its limits lie.
Shape: three points instead of a stencil
A brow shape depends on three points: beginning, arch and end. The area between them can be adjusted; moving these landmarks changes the entire expression. We mark them before removing hair rather than relying on instinct.
The three points we measure
The beginning sits above the inner corner of the eye
A vertical line from the side of the nose indicates it. Removing hair inside this point makes the eyes appear farther apart. This is where people most often remove too much because the hairs grow irregularly.
The highest point sits beyond the pupil
Looking straight ahead, a line through the outer edge of the iris indicates the arch. Too far inwards can look surprised; too far outwards makes the arch collapse. The difference is only a few millimetres.
The end follows a diagonal through the outer eye corner
A line from the side of the nose through the outer corner shows where the brow should end. An overly short tail can visually pull the eye area down. If hair is missing there, further trimming cannot help; the goal is to make remaining fine hairs visible. If the tail has only recently become thin, seek assessment before treatment: see when brow changes need medical assessment.
What face shape really determines
“A round face needs angles; a square face needs a soft arch” is magazine shorthand, not a measured rule. A defensible principle is to follow the growth direction and use shape where enough hair exists. A shape without hair must be redrawn every morning. That is makeup work, not an enduring brow shape.
How quickly do eyebrows grow back after shaving?
Shaving shortens the visible shaft while leaving the follicle in the skin. In a small controlled study of five people, completely shaved eyebrows had fully regrown within six months, although one person with lighter, thinner brows took longer. The study is too small for a personal time guarantee, but it found no permanent loss from shaving.
What differs after tweezing
Tweezing removes the hair, not the follicle. The claim that one tweeze “destroys the root” is inaccurate. A different mechanism is documented: repeated traction with inflammation can destroy follicles and replace them with scar tissue. This traction alopecia is described on the scalp. Applying it to years of brow tweezing is plausible but unproven. Both promises, that every hair returns or that it never will, are guesses.
How long a brow takes to regrow
Brow hair has a much shorter growth phase than scalp hair. Any treatment of the hair lasts only until treated hairs are replaced. Published consumer guidance gives conflicting numbers; expect anything from a few weeks to a few months.
In practice, let brows grow for four weeks before a shaping appointment and only remove isolated hairs far below the intended line. Leave the upper edge alone because it forms the contour. Tweeze in daylight and step back from the mirror: at ten-times magnification, every hair looks misplaced.
Eyebrow tinting: what colour can do and how long it lasts
Tint changes contrast, not the amount of hair. It cannot fill gaps or move a contour; that requires hair or pigment. The visible effect depends on how many light hairs are present between darker ones.
How long the tint lasts
Colour sits on the hair rather than in the skin, so it disappears with hair turnover rather than on a fixed calendar. Surrounding skin may take on colour that fades within one or two days. In our experience, the brow remains clearly darker for three to four weeks.
What the tint contains and what the law says
Brow tint is oxidative hair colour: dye plus hydrogen peroxide. Switzerland does not maintain separate ingredient lists for cosmetics; Article 54 of its Foodstuffs and Utility Articles Ordinance refers to the annexes of EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. The few Swiss departures do not concern hair dyes.
A little-known distinction applies: legally, eyebrows are treated as hair, while eyelashes explicitly are not. Hair products may contain up to 12 per cent hydrogen peroxide, lash products only 2 per cent, and oxidative lash tint is restricted to professional use because of the greater risk around the eye. The same maximum applies to p-phenylenediamine after mixing: 2 per cent. The implications for lashes are covered in eyelash tinting and serums.
Why ordinary shelf hair dye is not intended for brows
Consumer hair-dye products must carry a warning not to use them for eyelashes or eyebrows; professional-use products do not carry that sentence. The dye itself is not prohibited at the brow, but lay and professional application are treated differently. Applying ordinary shelf hair colour to the brows goes against its own label. Products must also state that they are not intended for people under 16.
Patch testing: useful, but not a legal requirement
Neither Swiss nor EU cosmetics law requires a pre-tint patch test. It requires exclusion criteria and an age limit. On request, we test at the inner elbow and read the area after 48 hours because delayed reactions often become visible only after two days. A negative result is not a guarantee: delayed contact allergy develops only after previous exposure, so “I have always tolerated it” is not proof. Between 2002 and 2012, around four per cent of nearly 100,000 people tested in the European ESSCA network reacted to p-phenylenediamine. This was a clinic population suspected of eczema; prevalence in the general population is lower.
Eyebrow lamination: what it does and who it may suit
Eyebrow lamination adds neither colour nor material; it changes the direction of the hairs. The first lotion contains thioglycolic acid or ammonium thioglycolate and breaks disulphide bonds in the hair. The hairs are set into position and a second lotion closes the bonds again. In professional brow use, up to 11 per cent thioglycolate is permitted at pH 7 to 9.5. Process, duration and price are listed on the page for eyebrow lamination in Lucerne.
Who may benefit and who may not
- Dense, coarse brows with hairs growing in different directions.
- Hairs that have become stubborn and stand up in the morning.
- Brows that look good when brushed but lose their position after two hours.
We advise against it on very fine, sparse or brittle hair. There is little to reposition, and the lotions stress hair that is already delicate.
What the scientific literature does and does not show
PubMed contains one directly relevant publication on brow lamination: a 2025 review without original data. There is no clinical trial of effectiveness, longevity or the interval between appointments. Online week estimates come from manufacturer material. We allow six to eight weeks based on observation, not a measured result.
Thioglycolate risks are documented: allergic contact dermatitis with redness and blistering, along with protein loss and increased porosity in the hair. Rubbing and scratching eczema can contribute to loss of the outer brow. Patch-test studies reported sensitisation in 4.8 per cent of 203 Japanese suspected cases; in a Brazilian study of 147 people suspected of cosmetic eczema, 13 reacted to ammonium thioglycolate, just under nine per cent. These are selected clinical populations, not general-population rates.
How often it may be repeated
No study, statutory rule or long-term hair data define the interval. Our rule is no sooner than six weeks, and we skip a cycle if the hair feels dry or brittle. Lamination alone costs CHF 70 and takes 50 minutes; with tweezing it costs CHF 80, and with tweezing and tinting CHF 90. An honest before-and-after pair needs the same light, angle and brow position.
What an eyebrow serum can and cannot do
Two completely different product groups are sold under the same name.
Ingredients with measurable growth effects are medicines in Switzerland
Prostaglandin analogues, especially bimatoprost, can measurably stimulate hair growth. In Switzerland, all authorised bimatoprost products are prescription eye drops for glaucoma, according to Swissmedic's medicines list. No product is authorised here for eyelash or eyebrow growth. A serum containing a pharmacologically active concentration would therefore be an unauthorised medicinal product under Swiss therapeutic-products law.
The cosmetic-law position is still developing. On 2 February 2026, the EU Commission's Scientific Committee concluded that none of three assessed prostaglandin analogues could be considered safe at marketed concentrations. They were nevertheless not listed in the Cosmetics Regulation annexes in August 2026. A July 2026 Commission draft proposes adding prostaglandins and analogues to Annex II, which would prohibit them, but it has not been adopted. Saying they are already prohibited is inaccurate; calling them approved is also inaccurate.
The authorised US product information lists possible eye-area effects: brown iris pigmentation that is likely permanent, eyelid-skin darkening that usually reverses, and loss of fat around the eye with a deepened lid crease or drooping lid. Frequency estimates differ: a case series that actively searched for signs found them in more than 90 per cent, while New Zealand's Medsafe cites more than ten per cent from product information. Both concern therapeutic eye-drop dosing, not application to the brow.
What non-prescription serums contain
Over-the-counter products use peptides, panthenol and plant extracts. The best study we found was open and unblinded, followed 30 women for twelve weeks and compared only with their own baseline: lash length increased by around eight per cent. There is not even equivalent brow evidence, though products are often the same. Without a control group, the figure cannot be separated from placebo or measurement effects. Labels are also imperfect: in 2018, a German testing authority objected to more than half of 17 lash serums, finding bimatoprost at pharmacologically active levels in three, sometimes undeclared. We do not sell serum.
Tweezing, tinting or lamination: choosing by the concern
The options address different concerns and can be combined. The table separates contour, visual depth and direction.
| Treatment | What changes | How long | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eyebrow tweezing | Contour; hairs are removed and nothing is added | Until removed hairs grow back | CHF 28 |
| Eyebrow waxing | Contour, using warm wax rather than tweezers | Until removed hairs grow back | CHF 22 |
| Eyebrow tinting | Visual depth; light hairs become visible while the shape remains | Until tinted hairs are replaced | CHF 22 |
| Tweezing and tinting | Contour and depth in one appointment | Until removed hairs regrow and tinted hairs are replaced | CHF 45 |
| Eyebrow lamination | Direction; hairs lie in position instead of standing away | Six to eight weeks in our experience | CHF 70 to CHF 90, in three levels |
If hair is permanently missing and a treatable cause has been ruled out, another option is permanent makeup for eyebrows. Pigment is placed in the skin and hair-stroke work lasts one to two years. Rocío Furger has worked as a permanent-makeup artist since 2011.
We do not offer microblading or permanent-makeup removal. The guide to permanent-makeup removal explains why removal is the more complex side of the same decision.
When brow changes need medical assessment
Cosmetic treatment is not always the right response. See a doctor if brow hair is lost suddenly, on one side or in defined patches; if brows and lashes thin together; or if itching and persistent redness are added. A 2023 review lists thyroid disease, alopecia areata, compulsive hair pulling and a scarring alopecia at the frontal hairline among possible causes. Distinguishing them belongs with a dermatologist, not a beautician.
We neither tint nor laminate irritated, inflamed or injured skin. Product warnings list exclusions including a facial rash, a previous reaction after hair or lash dye, or a reaction to a temporary “black henna” tattoo. Tell us beforehand and we will postpone. The guide to skin type and skincare can help distinguish sensitivity from a current reaction, but it does not diagnose disease.

Frequently asked questions
How long do tinted eyebrows last?
As long as the tinted hairs remain in the brow. Colour sits on the hair rather than in the skin, so longevity follows hair turnover: three to four weeks in our experience.
Can I tint my eyebrows myself?
Consumer hair dye must say that it is not to be used on eyelashes or eyebrows. That sentence is absent from products intended for professional use. Applying an ordinary shelf product to the brow goes against its own label.
Is an allergy test compulsory before tinting?
No. The law requires exclusion criteria and an age limit, not a test. On request, we test at the inner elbow and read it after 48 hours because a delayed reaction may take two days to appear. A negative test cannot rule out a later allergy.
How often may I have eyebrow lamination?
There is no robust answer: no study defines repeat intervals and no law sets one. We wait at least six weeks and skip a cycle if the hair feels dry or brittle.
Will over-tweezed eyebrows grow back?
Neither outcome can be promised. Tweezing removes the hair, not the follicle. Repeated traction with inflammation and scarring can permanently destroy follicles, but this mechanism is described on the scalp rather than proven for brows. Leave the brow alone for six months to see what returns.
Does an eyebrow serum work?
Ingredients with established growth effects are prostaglandin analogues, authorised in Switzerland only as prescription glaucoma eye drops, not for hair growth. Non-prescription serums contain peptides and extracts; the best study is open, uncontrolled and measures lashes rather than brows. We do not sell serums.
