Removing female facial hair: waxing, laser or leaving it alone

By Rocío Furger · Published · Updated

There are essentially three approaches to female facial hair. Waxing removes the hair from the root and keeps the face smooth for around three weeks. Laser is only useful for dark, coarse hair. With fine, light facial hair, leaving it alone is often the right decision. Many women apologise on the phone before explaining what they are calling about. There is no need: facial hair is normal and differs from one woman to another. The question is not whether it must be removed, but whether it bothers you.

Why this is not unusual

How much hair grows on the upper lip and chin is influenced by genetics. In some families and regions of origin, stronger facial hair is the norm rather than the exception. We see the full range every day. Consultations are available in German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and English. Anyone who thinks she is the only person with facial hair is comparing herself with retouched images rather than real people.

Two situations call for medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment: if the hair increases markedly within a few months, or if it appears together with other physical changes. There may be an underlying hormonal cause. A beautician cannot and should not diagnose it; it belongs with your GP.

What waxing can do

Wax removes the hair from the root. The upper lip can be cleared in a few minutes and stays noticeably smoother for longer than after shaving because the hair must grow back through the skin. Regrowing hairs can feel finer.

Prices are fixed: upper lip CHF 15, upper lip and chin together CHF 30, and the full face CHF 45. The skin is usually red for a few hours afterwards.

What we advise against

Shaving the face means that stubble can be felt again after just one or two days. This is why many women repeat it daily and irritate the skin in the process. Tweezing a few coarse hairs is fine; tweezing an entire upper lip takes a long time and irritates each follicle individually.

When laser is the better option

Long-term hair reduction targets the follicle and requires several sessions because only hairs in a particular growth phase can be reached. It is most worthwhile when the hair is dark and coarse and returns reliably every few weeks. Complete removal is rare; fewer and finer hairs are generally a more realistic goal. Laser responds poorly to light, fine facial hair, for which waxing is the more honest recommendation.

In rare cases, more hair rather than less grows around the edge of a laser-treated area. We discuss this before the first session and stop treatment if it occurs.

One point rarely mentioned in advertising: since 1 June 2024, anyone who is not a doctor must hold the relevant certificate of competence under Switzerland's NIRSA framework (V-NISSG) to perform laser hair removal. Rocío Furger obtained hers in 2024. Ask to see this qualification at any beauty salon before booking, not only at ours.

The guide to what laser hair removal really costs explains prices by area, likely session numbers and why a total can only be estimated during a consultation. The areas we treat and their prices are listed on the page for laser hair removal in Lucerne.

When leaving it alone is the right decision

Fine, light facial hair can be waxed, but laser cannot reach it because the hair lacks pigment. Waxing it every few weeks may irritate the skin for a result that is barely visible to anyone but you.

Beauty advertising assumes the opposite and shows skin with no visible down at all. Hardly anyone has that naturally, and maintaining it requires constant repetition. If you are unsure whether treatment is worthwhile, contact us briefly by WhatsApp or phone and we will assess it at the appointment. We will also tell you when the answer is to leave it alone.

What happens at the appointment

  • Please do not shave for two to three weeks beforehand. The wax needs around five millimetres of hair or it cannot grip it.
  • Treatment takes place in a private room.
  • Nobody at reception announces the reason for your visit.
  • The upper lip and chin together take 10 to 15 minutes.
  • We first check whether the skin is currently irritated and would rather postpone than treat sensitised skin.
  • We ask whether you take acne medication or currently use acids or retinol on the skin. In that situation we do not wax; you should clarify when it is safe with your doctor before we reschedule.

Frequently asked questions

Does facial hair grow back stronger after waxing?

No. Waxing removes the hair from the root without making it thicker or darker. Shaving can create that impression because it cuts across the shaft and leaves a blunt edge that feels coarser. After waxing, the hair grows back with its naturally tapered tip.

How long does upper-lip waxing last?

On the face, usually around three weeks; on the legs, often longer. It depends on how quickly your hair grows. The interval can lengthen over time because not all hairs are in the same growth phase at once.

Does upper-lip waxing hurt?

There is a brief pulling sensation, usually stronger on the upper lip than on the legs because the skin is thinner. It lasts seconds. If you are sensitive, avoid scheduling the appointment in the days just before your period, when some people find their skin more reactive.

Can I go out immediately after facial waxing?

The skin is usually red for a few hours and, for some people, until the evening. If you have an event, book for the day before. We do not recommend makeup immediately afterwards because the skin has just been treated and may be more sensitive.

Can I wax while taking acne medication?

Please tell us before the appointment. We do not wax skin being treated with acne medication, acids or retinol. Ask your doctor whether and when waxing is safe again; we can then reschedule.

Does laser work on light facial hair?

Poorly. Laser needs pigment in the hair to work. Light blond, red or grey hair leaves too little for the energy to target. For fine, light hair, the realistic options are waxing or leaving it alone.

When should I see a doctor about increased facial hair?

Seek medical assessment if the hair increases markedly within a few months or appears together with other physical changes. There may be an underlying hormonal cause, which should be assessed by your GP before any cosmetic treatment.
