Laser hair removal: costs, sessions and devices
At Beauty Rocío, laser hair removal is priced by area and session: both underarms cost CHF 59 and the bikini area CHF 69. Because one session achieves little on its own, allow for six to ten appointments per area. That is the number that matters. This guide explains why several sessions are needed, which device suits which situation and which qualification Swiss practitioners have required since 1 June 2024.
What laser hair removal costs per session
Each area has a price, and that price applies to one session. The total cost of a course only becomes clear when the number of sessions is included.
Prices for individual areas

Why the price of one session says little
CHF 59 for one session on both underarms can sound manageable. Over six to ten sessions, it becomes six to ten times that amount. Anyone comparing offers should therefore ask two questions: what does one session cost, and how many sessions are planned? A low session price is not an advantage if twice as many appointments are required.
We give a five-per-cent discount on a package of five sessions and ten per cent on ten sessions. We still only calculate an estimated total during the consultation. Without seeing the hair colour, density and area, any figure would be guesswork.
How many sessions are really needed
There is no dependable single number. The literature describes four to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart as a minimum, followed by maintenance sessions every six to twelve months. In practice, we plan six to ten appointments at intervals of four to eight weeks for most areas. Anyone who guarantees a fixed number in advance is selling a level of precision that does not exist.
Only actively growing hairs can be reached
Laser works through pigment in the hair. The pigment absorbs the light and transfers it as heat towards the follicle. This is only effective while the hair is in its active growth phase. Transition and resting phases follow, and depending on the area only a proportion of hairs are growing at any one time. Several rounds are therefore required; the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health gives the same explanation in its enforcement guidance.
Why legs tend to respond better than the face
A complete hair cycle is not the same length everywhere: around a year on the legs, seven months in the underarms and half a year on the face. A 2022 systematic review found the strongest long-term reduction in areas with long cycles and the weakest on the face. Facial areas therefore tend to need more appointments and produce a weaker long-term result. The result can only be assessed after a complete cycle, not four weeks after the final session.
Which device suits which situation
“Laser” is not one device category but a family of devices. Three wavelengths are relevant to hair removal. The longer the wavelength, the less energy the epidermis absorbs. Longer wavelengths are therefore safer for darker skin but are also absorbed less strongly by the hair.

The three classes in detail
Alexandrite laser, 755 nanometres
Because the epidermis also absorbs substantial energy, the risk increases on darker skin. Studies describe alexandrite laser as more painful than intense pulsed light.
Diode laser, around 810 nanometres
At the institute, we use a diode-laser handpiece that emits several wavelengths. The page on laser hair removal explains what this means for treatment selection. Direct comparisons tend to rate diode laser as more painful than alexandrite laser; the sensation depends on fluence and cooling.
Nd:YAG laser, 1064 nanometres
The scientific literature recommends this wavelength for very dark skin. In Switzerland, the long-pulsed device class is restricted to doctors. That restriction does not automatically apply to a 1064-nanometre component in a diode device subject to competence requirements; the distinction is explained below.
What a Swiss beauty salon may use
According to guidance from the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, the certificate for “hair removal with laser” covers diode and alexandrite lasers. Long-pulsed Nd:YAG lasers are excluded because the authority identifies a very high risk of scarring at the relevant 1064-nanometre energy densities. Ablative lasers are excluded because they remove skin cells. Both are reserved for doctors.
This creates a tension worth understanding. International literature recommends for very dark skin the same wavelength that, as a stand-alone device, is restricted to a medical practice in Switzerland. The authority states that qualified practitioners may currently use diode devices that also emit a 1064-nanometre component in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, while advising against long-pulsed components in this range because of the risks. Ask the salon which device it uses and which wavelengths it emits.
Which skin and hair respond to laser
The hair needs pigment
Pigment in the hair is the target for the light. Without pigment, there is no target. White, grey, red and very light blond hair contains too little, and no wavelength can change that. Darker skin and the limits of standard classifications
Skin is commonly classified into six Fitzpatrick types, ranging from “always burns, never tans” to “never burns”. The classification is based on self-assessment and is therefore broad; studies of Black skin found that it did not correlate with actual sun sensitivity. A type on paper cannot replace a test patch on the skin.
For darker skin, more pigment in the epidermis means more absorbed energy. The response is to use longer wavelengths, lower energy, longer pulses and cooling. Pigment changes occur more often in this group. If we believe a case belongs in medical hands, we do not treat it.
The certificate of competence is the key check
Since 1 June 2024, commercial laser treatment in Switzerland may only be carried out by someone who holds the personal certificate of competence required under the V-NISSG framework. It is not optional further training but a condition for offering the treatment. Rocío Furger obtained the “hair removal with laser” certificate in 2024.
Under the Swiss Federal Act on Protection against the Risks associated with Non-Ionising Radiation and with Sound, anyone treating without this certificate risks a fine of up to CHF 40,000 (Art. 13 NISSG, as cited in the Federal Office of Public Health guidance current in August 2025).
Who issues it and how to check it
The certificate is not issued by the Federal Office of Public Health but by private examination bodies recognised by the Federal Department of Home Affairs. The Federal Office keeps a register of qualified people to which cantonal authorities have access. Two details help when asking: the certificate must come from one examination body, and certificates for individual course modules are not the required qualification.
Compliance is checked: cantonal authorities may carry out unannounced inspections, and a nationwide enforcement campaign continues until the end of 2026.
What the certificate does not tell you
It is a minimum requirement, not a quality seal. Previous professional experience is not required to obtain it; in principle, anyone can qualify. It says nothing about experience, device quality or results. It is the threshold below which you should not consider a provider. In before-and-after images, lighting, angle, shaved state and the interval between photographs should be comparable.
The certificate only covers the method for which it was issued. Intense pulsed light (IPL) devices are not lasers. We work exclusively with diode laser and do not offer IPL. Switzerland requires a separate certificate for IPL; a laser qualification does not automatically authorise work with an IPL device.
What applies before and after a session
- Do not tweeze or wax for six weeks beforehand. The laser needs the hair and root in the follicle as a target.
- Shaving is permitted and encouraged one to two days before the appointment.
- No fresh tan, sunbed or self-tanner. Sun protection is important before and after treatment.
- Both client and practitioner wear protective glasses from the first pulse. Correct eye protection is essential to prevent injury.
- Moles are covered. Removing them with a laser is prohibited in Switzerland, including in medical practices.
- Certain treatments on the eyelids and within ten millimetres of the eye are restricted to doctors; according to the guidance, the eyebrow area is not included. We do not work close to the eye in any case.
Redness and a sunburn-like sensation are common after a session. Crusting, inflamed follicles or pigment changes occur less often. A current review attributes most skin complications to application errors and characteristics of the treated skin. This is precisely why the qualification exists, and why we start with a test patch.
When laser is not useful
Not every enquiry leads to a course. We advise against treatment in four situations:
- If the hair contains too little pigment. Waxing then remains the method that reliably changes the visible hair; areas and prices are listed on the waxing page.
- If you want smooth skin in two weeks. Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks after one session, while the rest continue to grow.
- If you are pregnant. There are no data demonstrating harm, but equally none proving safety. We do not treat during pregnancy as a precaution, not as a medical claim.
- If the hair has increased markedly within a few months. There may be a hormonal cause, which should be assessed by your GP first.
A final note on terminology: the scientific term is “permanent hair reduction”, not permanent hair removal. There is no evidence for complete and permanent removal. The dependable long-term data come from a small number of controlled studies involving just over two hundred people; measured reduction ranges from roughly one third to more than eighty per cent, depending on device, area and skin type. That range is the real finding, and the reason we do not promise a percentage in advance.

A 1064-nanometre component in a diode device is treated differently. More important than the device name is whether wavelength, energy and pulse duration are set appropriately for you.
Will the hair stay away forever?
The evidence-based term is permanent hair reduction. Some treated follicles remain inactive while others recover and grow again; the body can also activate new hairs, especially after hormonal changes. The literature therefore provides for maintenance sessions every six to twelve months. Complete and permanent removal is not established.
Does laser work on blond or grey hair?
Hardly. The method needs pigment in the hair as its target, which is largely absent in white, grey, red and very light blond hair. Another wavelength does not change that. We assess this during the consultation and decline treatment rather than starting an unsuitable course.
May every beauty salon perform laser hair removal?
No. Commercial laser treatment requires the personal V-NISSG certificate of competence for hair removal with laser, compulsory since 1 June 2024. Ask to see it before booking a course, everywhere rather than only at our salon.
